14 modifiable risk factors for dementia
The third Lancet Commission report on dementia prevention, intervention, and care presents updated evidence showing that nearly half of all dementia cases worldwide could be prevented or delayed by addressing a set of 14 modifiable risk factors across the life course. These risk factors begin in early life and continue through midlife and later life, highlighting the importance of prevention at all ages.
The Remind UK Brain Health Clinic supports you to take a holistic and preventative approach to maintaining your brain function at any age. It’s important to understand your risk of developing dementia in the future because there’s lots you can do today to optimise your brain health.
Researchers have found high quality evidence identifying multiple risk factors for dementia. If these can be effectively managed, brain health can be improved and cognitive problems potentially delayed or prevented. As seen below, the latest report from July 2024 pinpointed fourteen modifiable risk factors that if addressed, could prevent nearly half of dementia cases worldwide.

What is the risk of developing dementia
Dementia prevalence is on the rise! Around 1 million people in the UK are living with dementia, and this is projected to rise to 1.4 million in 2040.
Our risk of developing dementia increases with age with 1 in 3 of us being diagnosed with dementia between the ages of 90 and 94.
Is dementia a normal part of ageing?
Dementia is not a normal part of ageing.
Can looking after my brain health really make a difference?
Yes! Recent evidence released by the Lancet suggests that up to 45% of dementia diagnosis maybe prevented if we could eliminate 14 modifiable risk factors. By taking proactive steps to look after our brain health we could possibly prevent or delay our risk of developing dementia in future.
What are two changes I can make today that will protect my brain in years to come?
Did you know that hearing loss increases the risk of developing dementia by 7%. However, by attending for a hearing test and wearing hearing aids if they are recommended it can eliminate this risk and help to protect your brain from cognitive changes in future.
Did you know that being regularly physically active can reduce your risk of developing dementia. Alzheimer’s research UK state if everyone were physically active, there’d be two fewer cases of dementia for every 100 people who develop it now. Current Government guidelines recommend being regularly active means 150 minutes a week (2 and a half hours a week) of moderate exercise, such as walking, or 75 minutes (1 hour 15 minutes) of vigorous intensity exercise a week, such as running; or a combination of both. Our phones give a summary of how much time we spend on our screens a week. Ofcom suggest that adults in the UK spend on average 4 and a half hours online a day. Do you think you could swap some of that time spent online to moving? Moving for 22 minutes a day would exceed the recommended physical activity guidelines.
